The Flu Circus Comes to Town!

This is just sad. This picture pretty much sums up the absurdity of the whole swine flu scare. Seriously, if we were in the midst of a pandemic health crisis, shouldn’t the mariachi guy have just stayed home? I mean, is his job that critical that he’s out working when the World Health Organization is declaring that “all of humanity is threatened” by swine flu. Like the mask is really going to protect him anyway. Ugh!
OK, let’s get real people. I’ve seen the wackos on the news wearing face masks in states where there have been no reported cases of swine flu. Our fear-mongering media loves stuff like this. Everywhere you look they are telling us that we should be terrified of this outbreak of swine flu.
Energy follows intent. Unless you want to drive yourself crazy, I would suggest you turn off the swine flu news, that is if you want to remain healthy. All this talk of swine flu has me feeling. . .well, a little sick actually. And I know I’m not the only one. And for what? A flu that has killed only a confirmed 16 people? It seems to me, that other than cancelling your bachelorette party to Cancun and being proactive about taking care of your health (which should be done 24/7 anyway), there’s not much to talk about.
Dr. Mercola put out an article on his website www.mercola.com, titled “Critical Alert: The Swine Flu Pandemic – Fact or Fiction?” I’m glad to hear that the term “swine flu” broke the record of any subject EVER searched on mercola.com (glad only because that means people are looking to the holistic doctor for information instead of the fear-based media). Here is my summary of what Dr. M has to say about the whole thing.
Pretty much anyone can see the sneaky subplot going on in this whole fiasco. The media is ramping us up to get on board with severe and unnecessary measures to prevent the spread of swine flu including possible mandatory vaccinations. Guess who stands to make A LOT of money from these vaccinations? Big Pharma, who conveniently owns most of the media as well. Nice.
The problem here is that the last time there was a swine flu scare, more people died from the vaccine than the actual flu! Several hundred people developed crippling Guillian-Barre Syndrome. “Even healthy 20-year-olds ended up as paraplegics.”
Currently, the only drugs that appear to be effective against the swine flu virus are the antiviral drugs Tamiflu and Relenza. COMMON side effects of Tamiflu include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, fatigue, and coughing. Is this supposed to be better than actually getting the flu? “More serious symptoms included convulsions, delirium or delusions, and 14 deaths in children and teens.” All this for a drug that only reduces the duration of the flu by 1 to 1.5 days. Yet as soon as Homeland Security declared a health emergency, 12 million doses of Tamiflu and Relenza were released from the nation’s stockpile. I certainly won’t be going anywhere near this drug as the hazards far outweigh the benefits.
The American pharmaceutical company Baxter has been chosen to produce a vaccine against the Mexican swine flu. Unfortunately, Baxter is also “under investigation for distributing the deadly avian flu virus to 18 different countries as part of a seasonal flu vaccine shipment.” Whether or not this “mistake” was deliberate is unclear. How do we know that if they come up with a swine flu vaccine, that it too will not be “accidentally” tainted with deadly viruses? I’d prefer NOT to be the guinea pig for that one.
Do we all remember the headlines and projections about the bird flu? That millions would die from bird flu? Well the bird flu killed a total of 257 people since 2003. Unfortunate yes, pandemic NO! As Mercola says, you are more likely to die from lightning striking you down, than bird flu. When you look at the stats for the swine flu (16 total deaths), I’m thinking the same applies here. I have more of a chance of landing a date with Derek Jeter than dying from swine flu. Madonna has more chance of getting a child from Malawi, than you do of getting swine flu. And Big Pharma has big bucks to gain by all of us freaking out like lunatics.
So what is one to do? Even Louis Pasteur admitted on his deathbed that “the terrain” is much more important than “the germ”. “The terrain” is your body, specifically the friendly bacteria in it that comprises your immune system. Technically, if you take good enough care of your body and your immune system, you could have sex with someone with swine flu and not get sick (not that you would want to, gross!). Here are the best ways to keep your immune system strong and healthy so that no ”germ” stands a chance in your “terrain”:
- Optimize your vitamin D levels by getting a sensible amount of sun. Contrary to popular belief, some sun is healthy, just do not get burned.
- Don’t eat sugar. It suppresses your immune system for at least 6 hours every time you do. Get rid of all the processed foods in your diet as well. Sometimes called the “white devils,” sugar, white flour and pasteurized dairy are “hell” on the immune system.
- Sleep 8 hours a night and get to bed before 11pm.
- Take a good source of Omega 3 fatty acids like fish oil. The one I like is Pharmax Pure Fish Oil Caps from www.ultralifeince.com because they are strictly tested for mercury and do not use any toxic carrier oils.
- Wash your hands frequently with a non-toxic soap. I like the soaps by Avalon Organics.
- Eat garlic. Garlic is anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal. Eat it raw if possible. I know, I know, it smells. My friends totally don’t invite me out when they know I’m doing an anti-fungal protocol. But that garlic sure does work.
- Use Young Living Thieves essential oil. This stuff works and it comes with a cool story. The Thieves blend of essential oils was created based on the historical account of four thieves in France who robbed victims of a killer plague. Normally when someone would so much as be next to someone with plague, they would contract it and die. These thieves were going around and robbing lots of people who were dead or dying of plague and they did not get sick! When they were finally caught, the French court offered them a lighter sentence in exchange for their secret which was to cover themselves with cloves, rosemary and other aromatics. These herbs have become the Thieves oil blend. Either rub it on your feet, put a drop on your tongue with each meal, or use as a waterless hand purifier after using public restrooms. Available from www.youngliving.us.
- Make sure that you are getting some friendly bacteria in your diet by either eating traditional foods like lacto-fermented vegetables, kombucha or kefir, or by taking a probiotic supplement. Probiotics are friendly bacteria that reside in your gut and help eliminate harmful bacteria, boost immunity and digest your food. Many of us are deficient in friendly bacteria from doing rounds of antibiotics which have killed them off. Having a good balance of friendly bacteria in your gut is essential to maintaining health. I like Pro-Bio 12 from www.ultralifeinc.com.
- Take a chill pill. Overwhelming stress compromises your body’s ability to fight infectious disease. On the flip side, any form of relaxing activity, like meditation, yoga, or massage, or doing something you love, such as gardening or dancing, actually boosts immunity.
- Get acupuncture. This ancient Chinese art of healing helps restore the body’s natural immune response. If you’re in NYC, my acupuncturist is Nicholas Sieben at www.spiritbodyacupuncture.com.
By focusing on these health habits (instead of pop-culture illnesses which will do little more than end up as a question on Jeopardy! one day) you will be way more likely to stay healthy this season. Bacon anyone?
